The Royal Canadian Legion is a not-for-profit, membership-based organization. We provide for
Veterans and their families in need, promote Remembrance, and provide essential services
within our community. We rely on several resources to fund our activities. Monies raised by the
Legion will go into one of three separate General Ledger accounts.

The first is the Gaming Account. Monies raised from gambling activities such as meat-draws, bingo, Self-Serve Terminals, 50/50 draws, or any other game of chance go into this account. All gambling in B.C. is regulated by the Independent Gambling Control Office, including the operations of the British Columbia Lottery Corporation. More than 80% of the monies raised from these means are given back to IGCO with the remainder being used to purchase bingo cards, meat and gift cards for meat draws etc.
The second is the Poppy Trust Fund. Through donations raised during the annual poppy drive, or from individual donations directly to the poppy fund, these monies provide financial assistance and support to Veterans, including Canadian Armed Forces and RCMP, and their families who are in need. Poppy Funds may be used for:
Grants for food, heating costs, clothing, prescription medication, medical appliances and equipment, essential home repairs and emergency shelter or assistance for Veterans and their families in need;
Housing accommodation and care facilities for Veterans;
Funding for Veteran Transition Programs that are directly related to the training, education and support needs of Veterans and their families;
Comforts for Veterans and their surviving spouses who are hospitalized and in need;
Veterans visits, transportation and day trips;
Accessibility modifications to assist Veterans with disabilities;
Educational bursaries for children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Veterans;
Support of cadet units;
Veteran drop-in centres and services in communities where Veterans would benefit;
Community medical appliances, medical training and medical research which will assist in the care of Veterans in the community;
Support the work of Legion Command and Branch Service Officers across Canada in assisting and representing Veterans;
Donations for relief of disasters declared by federal or provincial governments which impact Veterans in those communities; and
Promotion and administering of Remembrance activities to ensure Canadians never forget the sacrifices of Canada’s Veterans.
The third account is all other monies raised from the sale of liquor over the bar. It goes toward paying for daily operation costs such as rent, heat and hydro etc.
A large portion of your $55.00 dues support national and provincial operations such as administration, member programs and benefits, marketing, and facilities. The Legion is not affiliated with any political party or organization, and we do not accept financial assistance from any government party for our operations.
